What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar Disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood swings can affect sleep, energy levels, judgment, behavior, and the ability to think clearly. People with bipolar disorder may also experience periods of normal mood in between episodes.
Types of Bipolar Disorder
Just as symptoms of anxiety may be experienced differently by different people, anxiety itself has many variations. Types of anxiety disorders vary according to the kind of symptoms people experience, the circumstances that trigger the anxiety, as well as other overlapping mental health conditions that have anxiety symptoms.
It’s possible to experience more than one type of anxiety disorder at once. The best way to find out what type of anxiety disorder you are experiencing is to visit your doctor or psychiatrist for a diagnosis. For example, you might be someone who has generalized anxiety disorder and experiences panic attacks. Or you may have social anxiety disorder which gets exacerbated by specific phobias.
Bipolar I
Major Depressive Disorder is considered the “classic” type of depression. People who experience this type of depression have persistent symptoms and may feel like there is a dark cloud around them most of the time. They may lose interest in activities that once brought them joy, and may have trouble completing everyday tasks. The most common symptoms of major depressive disorder include issues with sleeping, eating, and weight loss or gain. It is typical to experience feelings of extremely low self-esteem and worthlessness. Some people with major depressive disorder also have suicidal thoughts. Those who suffer from major depressive disorder can be treated with therapy and/or medication.

Individuals with Bipolar Disorder may exhibit a range of symptoms
Bipolar disorder is characterized by alternating periods of mood elevation, known as mania or hypomania, and depression. During manic episodes, individuals may experience heightened energy levels, euphoria, impulsivity, and racing thoughts. They may engage in risky behaviors such as excessive spending, substance abuse, or reckless driving. Conversely, depressive episodes are marked by feelings of sadness, hopelessness, fatigue, and loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Changes in sleep patterns, appetite, and concentration are also common symptoms. Additionally, individuals with bipolar disorder may have mixed episodes, where symptoms of both mania and depression occur simultaneously.

What Causes Bipolar Disorder?
The exact cause of bipolar disorder is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurochemical factors. Genetic predisposition plays a significant role, as individuals with a family history of bipolar disorder are more likely to develop the condition. Environmental stressors, such as traumatic events or significant life changes, can trigger or exacerbate symptoms in those who are genetically predisposed. Neurochemical imbalances, particularly involving neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, are also thought to contribute to the development of bipolar disorder. Additionally, structural and functional abnormalities in the brain may play a role in the disorder’s pathophysiology.
